On April 21, GE Transportation Systems launched Auto Engine Start Stop (AESS), a software/hardware package designed to reduce non-GETS-manufactured locomotives' fuel usage, noise and emissions by controlling engine idle.


AESS automatically shuts down an idling engine after meeting certain oil-temperature and zero-speed conditions. An engine would automatically restart if certain conditions are exceeded or the engineer requires more power.


"Smart fueling technologies like AESS lower the amount of
diesel needed by our customers by 3 percent per locomotive per year," said Dave Tucker, GETS general manager of global service operations, in a prepared statement.


Coupled with other fuel-saving technology, AESS could help railroads save more than 10 percent in annual diesel costs, GETS said.


In 2001, the company introduced AESS technology for GETS-manufactured locomotives.
