Last week, Washington, D.C., area congressmen introduced the National Capital Transportation Amendments Act of 2007 (H.R. 401) in the U.S. House.

The legislation would provide $1.5 billion over 10 years to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to help fund capital improvements and maintenance.

“You can't have a healthy National Capital Region without a healthy Metro,” said Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), a bill co-sponsor, in a prepared statement. “The transit system is essential to bringing federal government and private sector employees to work, along with moving millions of visitors from around the country and around the world.

The congressmen proposed similar legislation last year. The House approved the measure in July, but Congress recessed before the Senate could consider it.
