On April 9, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved National Transportation Safety Board Reauthorization Act Of 2003 (H.R. 1527), which would reauthorize National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for four years.

Introduced April 1, the bill is similar to legislation that passed the House last year, but died in the Senate.

"It's my hope the new leadership in the Senate will pass this important legislation," said Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), who chairs the committee, in a prepared statement.

The bill — which now moves to the full House for a voice vote — would reauthorize NTSB at the following funding levels: $76.7 million in Fiscal-Year 2003, $83.7 million in FY 2004, $88.0 million in FY 2005 and $92.7 million in FY 2006.

H.R. 1527 also would require U.S. Department of Transportation to issue an annual report on the regulatory status of all significant safety recommendations it received from NTSB, and enable the board to turn over family assistance responsibilities to the Federal Bureau of Investigation if an accident was the result of a criminal act.
