Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas(METRO) recently obtained a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for transit-related security enhancements.

The authority plans to use the Mass Transit Security Grant funds to purchase additional safety and security equipment. METRO also plans to conduct threat and vulnerability studies to assess security deficiencies.

"The Houston region has been fortunate in being spared from any serious terrorist activity, but we must always be prepared for the possibility," said METRO Vice President & Chief of Police Thomas C. Lambert in a prepared statement. "This grant provides us with enhanced capabilities to react to potential threats to our transit system and the people who use it."
