Last week, the Ports of Indiana released a new study showing its three ports contribute $5.4 billion in economic activity and 43,700 jobs to the state annually.

Conducted by Martin Associates and peer reviewed by economics professors from Indiana University, the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University, the study focused on 2009 data and calculated “conservative estimates” for the ports’ annual impacts, according to the Ports of Indiana.

The study found the ports in Mount Vernon, Burns Harbor and Jeffersonville, Ind., also helped generate $2.4 billion in personal income, $732 million in local purchases, and $224 million in state and local taxes.
