It wasn’t an “A,” but it wasn’t an “F” either. Yesterday, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced the results of a recent CSX Transportation-wide safety inspection show the Class I’s performance is improving, yet the railroad still isn’t “doing enough to make safety a top priority,” FRA Administrator Joseph Boardman said in a prepared statement.

“Our inspectors identified problems in every area of the company’s safety performance, including track, hazardous materials and on-track equipment,” he said.

FRA inspectors conducted the investigation in January following several CSXT train accidents. The inspectors recommend the FRA assess 199 safety violations against the Class I while an ongoing safety investigation continues at CSXT.

Earlier this month, the FRA announced plans to inspect the railroad’s track in New York and assess the Class I’s rail inspection program following a CSXT derailment that occurred March 12 in Oneida, N.Y. Boardman also met with CSXT senior executives to discuss the railroad’s recent safety record and results of the January inspection.
