Four Class Is have landed on Military Times EDGE magazine’s list of the top 50 “Best for Vets” employers for 2010. The publication ranked BNSF Railway Co. No. 3, CSX Corp. No. 5, Union Pacific Railroad No. 10 and Norfolk Southern Railway No. 50. General Electric Co. topped the list.

The magazine ranked the Best for Vets employers based on veteran recruiting, training and mentoring practices; reserve policies; and how well a corporate culture represents, retains and supports veterans and military personnel.

Since 2005, UP has hired about 5,000 veterans.

“Union Pacific has found that military veterans, who served in a large, diverse and safety-sensitive organization, operating 24/7, adapt well to the challenges of railroad operations,” said Senior Vice President of Human Resources Barb Schaefer in a prepared statement.

And so far this year, 17 percent of BNSF's new hires once served in the military.

“We hire employees from many walks of life, but we are especially proud of our record in hiring military veterans, who are known for being mission-focused, skilled, highly motivated, and who possess unique life experiences and technical expertise,” said BNSF Director of Staffing Connie McClendon, a U.S. Navy veteran, in an item posted on the "BNSF News" web page.

Earlier this year, G.I. Jobs ranked UP No. 1 on its Top 100 military friendly employers list, which also included BNSF.
