New Jersey Transit is moving to the next phase of the Hoboken Connect project, which calls for significant developments and improvements to the historic Hoboken train station.

Hoboken city officials last week approved a redevelopment agreement for the project with LCOR Hoboken Rail Station Redevelopment. The project had stalled for 15 years, but was jump-started through collaboration between LCOR, NJ Transit, the city and the state, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.

"This will greatly benefit the millions of NJ Transit, Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) and NY Waterway customers who rely on this vital, intermodal transportation hub every year," said NJ Transit President and CEO Kevin Corbett. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with Hoboken and LCOR to bring this project to life and restoring Hoboken Terminal to be the crown jewel of our transit system."

Hoboken Connect calls for creating new office and retail space and affordable housing, as well as improvements to the streetscape around the train station. The project consists of private and public components over at least the next five years.

The private phase includes construction of a mixed-use residential building including 389 apartment units, 20% of which will be designated affordable housing; a 20-story office building; and 5,000 square feet of retail and other public spaces.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has committed $176 million to the project in the state's fiscal-year 2023 budget.
