Norfolk Southern Corp. is advancing plans for another intermodal facility along its proposed $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor. Yesterday, the Class I announced it will provide $6 million and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, $5 million to expand and enhance the Philadelphia Navy Yard facility.

To be completed in mid-2010, the $11 million project is designed to expand the terminal’s capacity to more than 72,000 containers and trailers annually. The Navy Yard is situated on the Crescent Corridor, a 2,500-mile domestic intermodal route NS plans to establish — via a public-private partnership — between New Jersey and Louisiana.

"Because of its strategic location to southeastern Pennsylvania, south Jersey and Delaware, the expansion of the Philadelphia Navy Yard is critical to the success of our Crescent Corridor," said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.

During the past few months, NS announced plans to build intermodal terminals along the corridor in Rossville, Tenn., near Memphis; McCalla, Ala., near Birmingham; and Greencastle, Pa. The Class I also plans to spend $52 million to improve its Harrisburg, Pa., terminal, and $27 million to upgrade track and signals in other parts of Pennsylvania. In addition, the railroad will straighten curves, add passing sidings and improve signals in other states.
