The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is accepting public comments on the state's rail plan, which will will serve as a five-year blueprint for New Mexico's railroad program.NMDOT developed the plan in conjunction with state, local and tribal transportation agencies, regional planning organizations, railroads and other rail stakeholders.Posted on NMDOT's website, the plan sets state policy for freight- and passenger-rail operations, and identifies current and future rail facilities, services, needs, issues and opportunities. The plan also evaluates and prioritizes the benefits, costs and efficiencies of potential new rail projects and services according to funding availability and other factors.NMDOT is accepting public comments through Jan. 3, 2014, including emails to its Rail Bureau. The department also is soliciting public input through the state's regional planning organizations in October, November and December.In addition, NMDOT plans to soon hold public meetings in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and other locations to review the plan.
