New coalition to press Congress for intermodal infrastructure funds

Capacity constraints continue to plague U.S. trade corridors and gateways. If left unchecked, transportation system congestion could put a serious stranglehold on the economy.

To help keep the freight network fluid, a collection of transportation associations, ports, engineering firms, and state and local government agencies last week announced they’d formed Coalition for America’s Gateways and Trade Corridors. The coalition’s mission: promote federal intermodal freight investment.

"Failure of trade gateway infrastructure to keep pace with growth … will hold back expansion and prosperity in coming years," said Stephen Hayes, the coalition’s executive director, in a prepared statement. "[We] will play a key role in developing a consensus among members of Congress for a federal funding policy that supports intermodal connectors and trade corridors."
