Last week, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) awarded more than $1.5 million in state capital budget funds to help finance four freight-rail projects.

PennDOT's Bureau of Rail Freight, Ports and Waterways oversees the funds, which are available to any of the state's 70 railroads to help pay for building, maintaining, repairing and rehabilitating track, sidings and grade crossings.

The department awarded:
• $501,000 to the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Co. to rehabilitate its mainline and some passing lanes, and reconstruct 75 track miles in three counties;
• $500,000 to Northeast Freight Transfer Inc. to rehabilitate track at its Taylor intermodal facility;
• $333,744 to Energy Resources Inc. to rehabilitate a spur off Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad Co.'s mainline to increase coal loading and transloading capacity; and
• $210,000 to SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority to build a bridge over a new rail spur near Pleasant Gap.
