The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has opened the application period for its Rail Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP) and the Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP).
PennDOT manages the two grant programs: RTAP, a capital budget grant program funded with bonds; and RFAP, which is funded through the Multimodal Fund.
Both programs provide financial assistance for investment in freight-rail infrastructure, with the intent of preserving essential freight-rail service and stimulating economic growth through new or expanded freight-rail service.
Applications for either program are due Aug. 30.
In the 2023 grant period, PennDOT awarded $42.5 million for 25 freight-rail projects supporting more than 300 jobs statewide. Pennsylvania ranks first in the country in the number of operating railroads at 65 and ranks near the top in total track mileage at more than 5,600 miles, according to a PennDOT press release.
