Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced it will issue grants totaling $2.6 million for 14 freight-rail projects. The funds are the second round of grants issued through the state’s 2006 Rail Freight Assistance Program.

In October, PennDOT announced plans to provide $20 million in freight-rail grants through the department’s Bureau of Rail Freight, Ports & Waterways.

The most recent grants include:
• $750,000 to Pittsburgh & Ohio Central Railroad Inc. to rehabilitate 16 track miles;
• $243,264 to the Redevelopment Authority of Luzerne County to rehabilitate track;
• $197,512 to the Carbon County Railroad Commission to rehabilitate 18 miles of mainline track and a bridge;
• $154,035 to ISG Plate Inc. to upgrade track;
• $150,516 to C/G Electrodes L.L.C. to rehabilitate a rail spur;
• $123,060 to the Lebanon Valley Economic Development Corp. to reconstruct track so a building products firm can connect to a Norfolk Southern Corp. mainline;
• $100,000 to Pennsylvania Biodiesel Inc. to build a rail siding for a new biodiesel facility;
• $100,000 to B or P Realty to construct a runaround track and loading facility for a distribution center on Allegheny & Eastern Railroad’s line; and
• $85,400 to Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad Co. to build a runaround track and eliminate an eight-mile reverse move.
