Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville boosts rail volume

The Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville recently reported a freight increase through the first five months of 2010.

Rail traffic moving in and out of the port soared more than 70 percent, while river barge shipments increased 35 percent.

The port has registered growth in shipments of base commodities — such as grain, fertilizer, steel, salt, asphalt, minerals, plastics and petroleum — since November 2009, port officials said in a prepared statement.

“Most port tenants have not fully rebounded to pre-recession numbers, but the increases in shipments seem to be indicating some economic recovery in the region,” said Port Director Matt Smolek.
