The total rail-car backlog declined to 77,640 rail cars on Oct. 1 from 89,155 units on July 1, according to third-quarter 2016 reporting statistics from the Railway Supply Institute Inc.The backlog previously stood at 95,038 units on April 1 and 111,019 units on Dec. 31, 2015.Third-quarter 2016 orders declined to 5,526 units from 7,555 units in the second quarter and 6,646 in the first quarter. Orders in third-quarter 2015 stood at 7,374 rail cars.Deliveries also were down, to 15,375 rail cars in the third quarter from 15,655 units in the second quarter and 16,834 units in the first quarter. Deliveries in third-quarter 2015 were 20,476 rail cars.
