On June 9, The Greenbrier Cos. announced it received orders for 1,270 double-stack intermodal wells and 300 box cars from TTX Co., and 850 double-stack intermodal wells from Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

The $120 million orders increased the car builder's combined North American and European backlog to a record 12,100 units valued at $630 million — more than double Greenbrier's 5,200-unit backlog on Aug. 31, 2002, and almost five times its 2,500-unit backlog on May 31, 2002. The company expects the orders to stretch its North American backlog into fiscal-year 2005.

"All orders received in North America in fiscal 2003 are of similar car types: double-stack, center-partition and box cars," said Greenbrier President and Chief Executive Officer William Furman in a prepared statement. "As such, Greenbrier will continue to realize operating efficiencies of longer and more efficient production runs."

Since September 2002, Greenbrier has received North American and European orders for 11,200 cars valued at $590 million — nearly
double the orders for 6,000 units valued at $310 million the car builder received during all of FY2002.
