The Surface Transportation Board plans to hold two public hearings as part of the board's fifth and final oversight round regarding the 1998 Conrail split between Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation.

On April 2, STB will conduct a hearing in Trenton, N.J., concerning the transaction's shared asset areas in Philadelphia, Detroit and northern New Jersey; On May 3, the board will hold a hearing in Washington, D.C., addressing all other merger aspects.

STB's approval of the merger included various conditions, including a five-year general oversight period to enable board members to assess the transaction's implementation and other conditions' progress.

In its original July 1998 decision, the board planned to hold at least one public hearing prior to June 1, 2004 — the merger agreement's fifth anniversary.
