STB schedules public hearing to address rail capacity, traffic projections

On April 11, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) will hold a public hearing to discuss railroad traffic forecasts and infrastructure needs.

The hearing will address capacity constraints, railroads’ ability to meet rising demand, needed freight-rail infrastructure investments, potential solutions to rail traffic and capacity challenges, and public-private financing partnerships.

“Our nation’s freight-rail system will be relied upon to handle significant increases in traffic in the years ahead,” said STB Chairman Charles Nottingham in a prepared statement. “This hearing should shed light on whether current plans and investments are adequate to meet rail capacity demands, and, if not, what new policies and strategies need to be implemented.”

The STB will conduct the hearing at its new Washington, D.C., headquarters located at 395 E Street S.W.
