Today, members of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) will break ground on the first phase of the Transbay Transit Center project, a temporary facility designed to serve bus passengers while a new transit center is built.

Scheduled to open in 2014, the $3.4 billion Transbay Transit Center will connect eight San Francisco Bay-area counties via nine transportation systems, including Caltrain, San Francisco Municipal Railway, Bay Area Rapid Transit and the future California high-speed rail system. The project also calls for extending Caltrain commuter-rail service 1.3 miles underground from its current terminus to the transit center, and developing office, housing and retail space.

A collaboration of Bay-area government and transportation agencies, TJPA seeks to replace the Transbay Terminal to meet the region’s transportation needs. The authority includes representatives from the city and county of San Francisco, the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board/Caltrain, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.
