South Carolina Public Railways to retrofit two locomotive engines
advertisement
The South Carolina Public Railways recently received a $105,000 state grant to replace engine components in two of its 10 locomotives to reduce air emissions. The grant will cover half the project’s cost.
The replaced components will cut particulate matter emissions by 31 percent and reduce nitrogen oxides emissions by about 52 percent, according to the railroad. In addition, the project will improve the locomotives’ fuel efficiency.
A division of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, South Carolina Public Railways operates the Port Utilities Commission of Charleston and Port Terminal Railroad, which provide switching services to state ports authority terminals, and interchange with CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway. The railway also operates the East Cooper and Berkeley Railroad, a short line that serves BP Chemical and Nucor Steel.
