South Carolina small road set to acquire NS line

Lancaster and Chester Railway Co. (L&C) recently filed a notice of exemption with Surface Transportation Board to acquire from Norfolk Southern Railway a 30.8-mile line between Kershaw and Catawba, S.C.

L&C already operates the line — which connects to its track near Lancaster, S.C. — under a lease agreement with NS.

In April 2001, the Class I and short line initially reached a lease/purchase agreement on the line. The railroads expect to finalize a purchase agreement soon.

The deal would more than double L&C’s track mileage, from 29 miles to 59 miles — the first expansion in the short line's 107-year history.
