Transportation Services Index inched up in June

In June, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) climbed 0.2 percent from May’s level to 100.8, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index also increased 3.5 percent vs. June 2009’s TSI.

June’s Freight TSI of 97.9 rose 0.2 percent on a month-over-month basis and 4.1 percent on a year-over-year basis. During the 13 months previous to June, the Freight TSI climbed 4.7 percent after declining 15.3 percent in the prior 10-month period beginning in August 2008. The index also has posted gains in 10 of 13 months.

June’s Passenger TSI of 111.2 dipped 0.1 percent from May’s level but rose 1.8 percent from June 2009’s count.

In the second quarter, the TSI rose 0.5 percent, Freight TSI inched up 0.1 percent and Passenger TSI increased 1.6 percent compared with first-quarter levels.
