Another month, another 14-year high for the Transportation Services Index (TSI). In May, the index of 124.3 rose 0.1 percent compared with April and 8.5 percent compared with May 2003, and for the fourth-straight month set a new 14-year record, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

Since August 2003, the TSI has risen every month except January. BTS has revised April's index to 124.2 from 124.4.

The Freight TSI of 126.1 — which also set a 14-year high — rose 0.2 percent compared with April and 7.5 percent compared with May 2003. BTS revised April's Freight TSI to 125.8 from 126.0.

The Passenger TSI of 120.6 dropped 0.2 percent compared with April but rose 11.1 percent compared with May 2003. BTS revised April's Passenger TSI to 120.8 from 121.1.

The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit. The index includes historic data from 1990 to the present; changes are measured against a base year of 1996.
