In November, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) totaled 108.8, down 1.1 percent from October’s level and 2.3 percent from November 2007’s total, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

A measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, the TSI also declined 1.2 percent on a year-over-year basis during 2008’s first 11 months. The TSI merges the Freight and Passenger TSIs into a single index.

November’s Freight TSI totaled 107.6 — the lowest level since January 2004, BTS said. The measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire rail, trucking, inland waterway, pipeline and air freight firms dropped 1.4 percent compared with October’s level, falling for the third time in four months.

The Freight TSI also decreased 2.4 percent compared with November 2007’s level. Through 2008’s first 11 months, the index dropped 0.7 percent.

November’s Passenger TSI totaled 114.0, down 0.2 percent from October’s level and 2.1 percent from November 2007’s total. Through 11 months, the measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services from for-hire passenger air, local transit and intercity passenger-rail providers decreased 2.8 percent vs. the index from the same 2007 period.
