Transportation index slipped slightly in August, BTS says

In August, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) clocked in at 110.5, down 0.1 percent from July’s level but up 4.1 percent from August 2010’s mark, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The Freight TSI inched up 0.4 percent from July’s index to 108.7, the highest level since July 2008. On a year-over-year basis, the Freight TSI climbed 4.6 percent. Freight shipments measured by the index rose 1.6 percent through 2011’s first eight months.

The August Passenger TSI of 115.4 dipped 1.4 percent from July’s level but increased 2.5 percent from August 2010’s mark. The index is up 4.8 percent over the past five years.
