Amtrak and Union Pacific Railroad recently reached an agreement on a performance plan designed to reduce passenger-train delays caused by trackwork and track conditions.

“This agreement defines in detail the maximum number of minutes of ‘slow order’ delays allowable on each Amtrak route operated on Union Pacific,” said Amtrak Assistant Vice President-Host Railroads Paul Vilter in a prepared statement.

Amtrak corridors entirely or partially covered under the agreement include the Cascades in Oregon and Washington; Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner and San Joaquin in California; Lincoln in Illinois; Mules in Missouri; San Francisco-to-Chicago California Zephyr; Los Angeles-to-Seattle Coast Starlight; Los Angeles-to-New Orleans Sunset Limited; and San Antonio-to-Chicago Texas Eagle.

Beginning today, Amtrak will temporarily adjust its California Zephyr schedule to reflect trackwork UP is conducting along the route, primarily between Reno and Salt Lake City, Nevada. The intercity passenger railroad expects to make incremental changes to shorten the schedule through 2009’s end, when UP completes the trackwork.
