UP contracts Harsco Track Technologies for long-term grinding, track-renewal services

Union Pacific Railroad recently awarded Harsco Track Technologies (HTT) two multi-year contracts to provide rail-grinding and track-renewal services.

Ranging from five to eight years and including follow-on and multi-year renewal options, the contracts will add about $40 million to HTT's UP-derived revenue, according to a prepared statement.

A subsidiary of Harsco Corp., HTT plans to build a 120-stone production grinder, a smaller switch and crossing grinder, and a track renewal train to perform the contracted work.

Scheduled to be delivered in second-half 2004, the machines would complement HTT's fleet of production, and switch and crossing grinders, track renewal units and other equipment already deployed on UP.

The UP contracts follow several international grinding-equipment orders HTT received earlier this year, including an April order from United Kingdom's Network Rail for Stoneblower track-maintenance equipment; a February order from German track builder Eichholz GmbH for 20-stone switch and crossing grinders; and a January order from China's Guangzhou Metro System for switch and crossing grinders.
