Union Pacific Railroad is a difference maker when it comes to using geographic information system (GIS) software. So says ESRI, which plans to present a Special Achievement in GIS Award to the Class I tomorrow at a San Diego conference.

A GIS software provider, ESRI is recognizing UP for employing the technology to improve decision-making and business practices.

The railroad’s engineering department uses GIS to determine where trackwork is necessary; real estate and tax departments employ the software to manage property; marketing department rely on the technology to set rates and establish shipping routes; and risk management and safety departments use GIS to maintain real-time geographic information for emergencies. UP also employs GIS to provide customers an online interactive map for tracking shipments.
