UP surges ahead with e-procurement system

Union Pacific Railroad is quickly gaining speed on the e-procurement track. The Class I, using Clarus Corp.'s eProcurement™ software, recently completed an online office-supply order with Boise Cascade Office Products Corp. using a new buyer-managed catalog.
UP also recently developed catalogs with Comark Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Snap-on Tools Inc., Software Plus Inc., GESCO Corp. and Better Business World, as well as an internal stock catalog that the railroad soon expects to reach 60,000 supply items, separated into stock and non-stock materials.
During the next few months, UP plans to expand the user base of its e-procurement system, deploy the system to the majority of its 50,000 workers and add more supplier catalogs.
"It was our goal to implement a procurement solution that would integrate easily with our other systems and be accessible to the bulk of our employees," said Tom Holmes, UP director of e-Supply Chain, in a prepared statement.
Clarus' software — which Burlington Northern Santa Fe began using last year for its own internal procurement initiatives — is designed as a complete e-commerce solution for the entire buying and selling process, covering sourcing to procurement, to invoicing and payment.
