UP to speed up freight, passenger trains in three Texas towns

Beginning Nov. 6, Union Pacific Railroad will begin increasing freight- and passenger-train speeds in Beaumont, China and Nome, Texas.

The railroad will increase maximum speeds 5 mph per week until freight trains reach a top speed of 70 mph and passenger trains, a top speed of 79 mph. Freight and passenger trains’ maximum speed currently is 60 mph and 70 mph, respectively.

UP is increasing train speeds to increase traffic fluidity and improve grade crossing safety. Statistics show more crossing collisions occur when trains operate at slower speeds, UP said.
