U.S. Class Is employed more people in February


Only the professional and administrative category registered an employment decrease in February compared with January.

As of mid-February, U.S. Class Is employed 113,822 people, a 1.85% increase compared with mid-January, but a 0.22% decrease year over year, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

Only the professional and administrative category registered an employment decrease in February compared with January. That category totaled 9,639 people, down 0.34% from January's level.

The other categories registered the following increases: transportation (train and engine), 2.9% to 47,096 people; transportation (other than train and engine), 1.68% to 4,733; executives, officials and staff assistants, 1.53% to 7,379; maintenance of equipment and stores, 1.4% to 17,177; and maintenance of way and structures, 1.26% to 27,798.

Year over year, the following categories registered increases: Transportation (train and engine), 2.84%; and executives, officials and staff assistants, 1.56%.

The following categories registered year-over-year decreases in employment: professional and administrative, 5.45%; maintenance of equipment and stores, 5.18%; maintenance of way and structures, 0.54%; and transportation (other than train and engine), 0.36%.
