On Jan. 20, United Parcel Service Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike Eskew was elected chairman of the U.S.-China Business Council, an organization representing U.S. corporations that conduct business in China.

A 32-year UPS veteran, Eskew has served as the shipper's top officer since 2002. UPS has conducted business in China since 1988, but obtained direct-air operating rights in 2001. Since that time, the shipper's annual Chinese business has risen from less than $100 million to a projected $300 million in 2004.

"We have been expanding our range of services and network of offices to better link China to the world," said Eskew in a prepared statement. "A forum like the U.S.-China Business Council plays a critical role in helping American businesses understand China's growing role in world trade."

Founded in 1973 as the National Council for U.S.-China Trade, the U.S.-China Business Council serves several hundred U.S. companies from offices in Washington, D.C., Beijing and Shanghai.
