• Bombardier Transportation has received a $485 million order from Deutsche Bahn AG for the delivery of 137 Bombardier Twindexx 2010 double-deck coaches and 27 Bombardier Traxx P160 AC locomotives, scheduled to enter service in 2013. The contract involves double-deck cab cars and intermediate coaches with high/low-floor entrance. It is part of a framework agreement signed in 2008; the locomotives order is part of an agreement signed in 2000.

• Norbert Klapper assumed management of Voith Turbo’s rail market division on Jan 1. Prior to his appointment, he was executive vice president of Voith Industrial Services Holding GmbH & Co. KG in Stuttgart, Germany. Klapper joined Voith in 2005 to work for the Industrial Services' group division, where he oversaw the facility services division for Europe as executive vice president. He was appointed executive vice president of the Industrial Services’ automotive division in October 2010.

• Mobile electronics supplier Marlin Technologies Inc. has moved to a new, 33,000-square-foot plant in Horicon, Wis., to accommodate the company's growth. The new space adds more room for the company’s design, manufacturing and test capabilities, as well as for additional staff, Marlin President Andy Lechtenberg said in a prepared statement. The firm specializes in custom-engineered modules designed for harsh environments for the railroad, agricultural, construction, military, off-road and turf care equipment industries.

• Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche Ltd., members of the BBMV consortium along with Alpine Beton und Monierbau, Balfour Beatty and Morgan Sindall, have obtained an estimated $365 million contract to build tunnels for the Liverpool Street and Whitechapel stations in London. The contract is part of the Crossrail project, an express, east-west rail link across London slated to open in 2018.

• William Schafer Jr. has joined TranSystems' freight-rail group. He is based in the transportation engineering consulting firm's office in Schamburg, Ill., where he will work with passenger-rail clients and Class Is associated with the Chicago area and Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) projects. He has more than 30 years of experience in the rail industry, specializing in railroad operation requirements and integration with facilities planning and design. Prior to joining TranSystems, Schafer held leadership positions with Jacobs Edwards and Kelcey and Parsons Transportation Group in Chicago, and was a division engineer for Norfolk Southern Railway.
