• GE Transportation won a contract from Hangzhou Metro Group Co. Ltd. to provide integrated supervision and control systems on Line 1 of the Hangzhou Metro in China. GE will install its RailEdge Supervisory Control application on the line — the first time the company’s advanced operations control technology and a Windows-based application will be used in China's transit market, GE said. Expected to open at 2011’s end, the 33.5-mile line will feature 34 stations, one operational control center, one yard and one depot. GE will partner with Chinese firms SUPCON and ZTINSTALL to complete the project.

• Alstom Transport obtained a $218 million contract from Australia’s state of Victoria to provide 20 additional X’Trapolis suburban trains for the city of Melbourne’s metropolitan network. The order is an option included in a January 2008 contract for 18 X’Trapolis trainsets. Delivery of the six-car trainsets will begin in fourth-quarter 2010. Alstom also won a $154 million contract from the Singapore Land Transport Authority to install 43 miles of track for Singapore metro’s future downtown line. Alstom will install a third rail, and test and commission the line.

• The Andersons Inc.’s Rail Group reported 2008 operating income of $19.8 million, up slightly from 2007’s $19.5 million. Revenue increased from $130 million in 2007 to $134 million last year. The group’s rail fleet expanded by 5 percent during 2008, including the addition of 43 locomotives, and ended the year with 23,800 cars and locomotives. In the fourth quarter, the group generated $3.3 million in operating income and $28 million in revenue vs. $3.8 million in operating income and similar revenue in fourth-quarter 2007.

• Video surveillance provider Safety Vision has appointed Tao Wu as lead embedded software designer for the company’s line of mobile digital video recorder systems. Used for transit, police, school bus and other mobile fleet applications, the systems are designed to record and manage video, audio, system health and metadata files.  Wu most recently served Samsung Information Systems America in various capacities and has extensive experience with major network protocol design and implementation, and embedded operating systems.
