• Global Railway Industries Ltd. announced the closing of the sale of Bach Simpson Corp. to Wabtec Corp. for about $13 million. About 15 percent of the purchase price is being held in escrow for potential indemnification claims.

• Bombardier Transportation recently received a $27 million order from Norwegian financial services group DnB NOR for the delivery of six FLEXITY Classic trams for the Spårväg City line in Stockholm, Sweden. The trams will be leased by Stockholm County Transportation Authority. Bombardier also announced it has received firm orders for rolling stock from an "undisclosed customer" valued at $365 million.

• Shannon & Wilson was part of the design and construction team awarded a California Transportation Foundation Award for their participation in the Donner Pass Tunnel Clearance Improvement project. Union Pacific Railroad opened its Donner Pass route to domestic double-stack intermodal container freight traffic in November 2009, marking the completion of a 12-month project designed to move cargo over a shorter, faster and more efficient route, according to a press release. Shannon & Wilson performed an engineering evaluation to improve clearances for 38 tunnels along the route.

• AECOM appointed Joseph Atwood project director in its U.S. Southwest and Mountain Transportation practice. Atwood will supervise and direct transportation projects throughout the Southwestern United States. He previously managed the in-house production of the Texas Department of Transportation’s reconstruction projects.

• EWI recently launched a passenger-rail manufacturing center from its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. The center is charged with developing and strengthening manufacturing supply chains for the rail and rolling stock industries; improving railroad product affordability; and developing technical innovations that will allow rail industry manufacturers to collaborate with original equipment manufacturers, according to a prepared statement.

• Grand Canyon Railway announced it will operate its steam locomotive 4960 powered by recycled vegetable oil on Labor Day weekend.
