• Rail-car lessor Mitsui Rail Capital L.L.C. appointed John O’Bryan as president. He has more than 20 years of rail industry experience, and has held various transportation service, logistics, sales and fleet management positions.

• In fiscal-year 2008, the Knorr-Bremse Group generated sales of $4.5 billion, up 4 percent compared with FY2007’s total. “After an adjustment for foreign exchange effects, this equates to operating growth of 6 percent,” the German braking system supplier said. Knorr-Bremse was able to buck a “turbulent market environment in the commercial vehicle sector” and boost overall sales because of a strong performance by the Rail Vehicle Systems Division, the company said.

• The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) is purchasing two new locomotive training simulators from Orca Railway Systems. The simulators mimic cab designs and train-handling characteristics of two multiple-unit cars. NICTD will install the simulators at its Michigan City, Ind., operations control center and use the devices for initial induction training, annual re-certification testing and remedial training.

• Veolia Transportation’s Rail Division named George Elsmore vice president of rail safety and compliance. He spent the past 14 years overseeing the California Public Utilities Commission’s Rail Safety Branch, most recently as program manager. Elsmore previously managed legislative affairs with governmental agencies at both the state and federal level, including the Federal Railroad Administration, and served Union Pacific Railroad in various capacities. Veolia Transportation is a private operator of multiple transit modes in North America, including rail, bus, paratransit, shuttle and taxi services.

• ALK Technologies is marking its 30th anniversary as a transportation and navigation software provider. Founded in 1979 in Princeton, N.J., the company originally focused on creating routing and mileage software for the North American railroad and trucking industries, including the PC*MILLER product line.
