• RailWorks Corp. appointed Robert Rolf vice president and general manager of the South Division of its RailWorks Track Systems subsidiary. He will be responsible for the Houston-based South Division with branch offices in Beaumont, Corpus Christi and Dallas, Texas. Rolf previously was area manager of RailWorks Track Services Inc.

• Harsco Corp. recently announced new orders totaling $13 million for its Harsco Rail unit, including orders from Bangladesh and Liberia. Harsco will construct a new Mark VI railway ballast tamper for the 1,700-mile Bangladesh Railway system. The Liberian order calls for the sale of a Harsco grinder to perform ongoing rail maintenance. Both deliveries are scheduled for 2011. Harsco also has received new orders from three U.S. railroads for its Drone tampers.

• Balfour Beatty Rail Inc. announced it has acquired Reuel Inc.’s Traction Power division. Based in Goldsboro, N.C., Reuel manufactures electrical components and equipment. The new Traction Power group will report to Transit Division Vice President Joe Reed and will be led locally by Tom Young, general manager of traction power.

• Nomad Digital Ltd. was awarded a contract to design, supply and install a remote condition-based monitoring system for 93 Alsom Class 465/2, 465/9 and Class 466 units that Alstom is supplying to Angel & Southeastern. The first three trains will be equipped for trial operation by November and fleet installation is expected to begin in January 2011.

• Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. was awarded a $12.5 million engineering services contract by Valley Metro Rail Inc. for the Central Mesa Light Rail Extension project. Jacobs will provide preliminary and final engineering services for the Mesa, Ariz., project.

• L.B. Foster Co. and Portec Rail Products Inc. announced they have executed a second amendment to the Agreement and Plan of Merger dated Feb. 16, 2010. L.B. Foster and Portec agreed to extend the “drop dead” date of the merger agreement from Aug. 31 until Dec. 30. In exchange for Portec agreeing to the extension, L.B. Foster will increase the tender offer share price and pay Portec $2 million if the transaction does not close by Dec. 30.

•    KiwiRail announce it has entered a $3 million partnership with IBM to provide KiwiRail Network with the software and services designed to improve visibility and management of its tracks, bridges and other network assets to improve speed, safety and reliability.
