• Railpower Technologies Corp. and U.S. subsidiary Railpower Hybrid Technologies Corp. have filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada and the United States. The locomotive builder’s day-to-day operations will continue without interruption during the restructuring process, Railpower said. The company also announced that President and Chief Executive Officer José Mathieu, and Vice President of Human Resources, Project Management and Information Technologies Hilaire Boudreau have resigned. In addition, Railpower named Richard Laliberté chief restructuring officer. He most recently was VP of engineering, quality assurance and product service.

• International rail consultant Interfleet Technology appointed Peter Taslimi and Kevin Johnson to its North American senior management team. Taslimi will serve in the Burlington office in Canada and Johnson will join the Philadelphia office. Taslimi most recently served Bombardier's Total Transit Systems in various capacities, including systems integrator and supervisor of testing and commissioning for the Jacksonville, Fla., monorail project. He previously was project manager-passenger equipment conversion for Ontario Northland. Johnson most recently was a technical manager for Michael Baker Jr. Inc. He previously served Lea & Elliott as a senior transportation engineer for the Port Authority of Allegheny County, where he held the position of senior rail vehicle engineer.

• Salco Products Inc.’s Hazarsolve division has sold more than 3,000 of its plastic dip tubes to some of the largest North American chemical shippers, the company announced. Suitable for non-corrosive applications, the dip tubes primarily are used in corrosive environments, such as HCL, ferric chloride, ferrous chloride, and sodium hypochlorite (bleach). Primary applications include rail cars, tank trucks, barges and stationary tank storage. Produced from polyethylene and Teflon® PTFE, the tubes are six times more abrasive resistant than steel dip tubes, Hazarsolve said.

• Dow AgroSciences L.L.C. has launched VM Radio, a podcast resource for railroad vegetation managers. Featuring interviews with top industry professionals and university researchers, VM Radio aims to explore trends in the marketplace and identify different resources available to railroad vegetation managers. Current podcast topics include tips when dealing with public sensitivity to herbicides, the time and cost benefits of taking an integrated approach to vegetation management using both mechanical and herbicide treatments, and an overview of the invasive species landscape. • The North Carolina Chapter of the Project Management Institute has honored Railinc President and Chief Executive Officer Allen West for his commitment and support for the organization in 2008. The institute helps Railinc develop high-quality information technology and project management talent, the company said. Certified project management professionals comprise about 10 percent of Railinc's staff.
