• Wabtec Corp. has obtained a $27 million contact from Parsons to provide equipment and services to implement positive train control (PTC) for Metrolink. Parsons won a contract in 2010 to manage and implement PTC for Metrolink’s 512-mile system. Wabtec will supply its Vital Electronic Train Management System (V-ETMS®), including its Commlink® and Train Trax™ products, as well as enhanced locomotive simulators. The project is the first use of interoperable PTC equipment in the transit industry under the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008, according to Wabtec.

• The Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver has approved Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.’s budget for continued services as FasTracks' program support services consultant for 2011. Jacobs has been the program support consultant since 2005. The contract's estimated worth is more than $17 million. RTD also authorized a six-year option to extend the contract term through July 2017.

• MACTEC has been retained as a member of PB Americas team on the Westside Subway heavy-rail line extension and a member of AECOM/PB Americas team on the Regional Connector light-rail project for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The two separate agreements call for MACTEC to provide geotechnical and environmental services for a combined project fee of about $12 million.

• A new patent awarded to Rutgers University will help expand Axion International’s intellectual property portfolio as it begins to sell a flame-retardant coating for use on existing railroad and structural building product lines, according to Axion. Through existing licensing agreements with Rutgers, Axion is authorized to sell and sub-license the flame-retardant coating throughout the United States, North America and South America.

• Haynes Corp. has received the 2011 Florida Companies to Watch Award by GrowFL, the Florida Economic Gardening Institute at the University of Central Florida. Funded by the state, ACG Florida and the Edward Lowe Foundation, the award is presented to companies that demonstrate the capacity to grow based on employee or sales growth, entrepreneurial leadership, sustainable competitive advantages and other criteria. Haynes manufactures diesel fuel injection systems for locomotives.

• Skelly and Loy Inc. has appointed Royce Holland Sturgill Jr. engineering technician; Amanda Slaughter, mine permitting specialist; and Cara Wicks, administrative assistant in the firm’s Wise, Va., office.
