VIA Rail Canada Inc. and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were recently honored for their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

VIA Rail received the Gold Parity Certification from Women in Governance, a nonprofit organization that supports women in career advancement and leadership development.

The certification recognizes the passenger-rail company’s efforts and achievements in promoting and supporting women’s leadership, career advancement and representation at all levels of the organization, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.

This is the fourth time VIA Rail has received parity certification from Women in Governance, having earned silver in 2018 and 2020, and gold in 2019. VIA Rail’s board is composed of five women and five men. Overall, 32% of management and 37% of non-management employees are women.

Meanwhile, PANYNJ received the Best Stand Out Retention award from the Transpacific Maritime Conference (TPM) held Feb. 27 to March 1 in Long Beach, California. The award recognizes the port authority’s “vast array” of employee business resource groups and its staff training efforts, PANYNJ officials said in a blog post.

This is the second consecutive year that the port authority has received a DEI-related achievement at the conference, PANYNJ officials said. TPM launched the "Salute to Diversity" awards in 2021 to recognize DEI leadership in the transportation and logistics industry.
