Wabtec Rail to supply more ballast cars to U.K.'s Network Rail

Wabtec Rail Ltd. obtained a $7 million follow-on order from Network Rail (formerly Railtrack Plc.) for 50 additional ballast cars plus spares.

A United Kingdom-based division of Wabtec Corp., Wabtec Rail delivered 190 similar cars to Network Rail during the past two years. The cars were used during first-phase construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, a high-speed line between London and the tunnel.

The cars are designed to carry up to 65 tons of ballast at speeds up to 60 mph. Ballast can be discharged on either side of or between rails through doors controlled by a hand-held radio remote-control system. Cars are designed to operate as a fixed set of five, with one car containing a diesel generator to power all the cars' ballast-discharge doors.

Wabtec Rail plans to deliver the cars and spares by year end.
