Alameda Corridor-East authority’s rail trench earns public works honor

The Alameda Corridor-East Construction Authority's (ACE) San Gabriel Trench project last week received the 2018 Project of the Year Award in the regional public agency category from the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA).
 
A 1.4-mile railroad trench completed earlier this year, the $293.7 million project is the largest in ACE's $1.7 billion grade separation program, which is overseen by the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. Spanning four new road bridges, the trench was completed following four years of construction.

The trench eliminates crossing delays for nearly 90,000 motorists each day; improves safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians; eliminates train horns and crossing bells; and helps emergency responders more quickly address local calls, ACE officials said in a press release.

Project partners included the city of San Gabriel, Union Pacific Railroad, Jacobs (the construction manager), Moffatt & Nichol (the engineering firm) and Walsh Construction Co. (the contractor).
 
"We are pleased to be recognized by our public agency peers for this monumental achievement in constructing the largest public works project in the history of San Gabriel and in the ACE program," said Mark Christoffels, the chief engineer for the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments
