The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last week approved improvements to the Clear Creek Levee Road grade crossing near Gale in Alexander County.

The improvements will include new automatic flashing light signals, gate installations and approach grade improvements at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing, according to an ICC news release.

The total estimated cost is $378,451.

The ICC recommends that the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund be used to cover 95% of the cost. UP will be responsible for the remainder as well as future maintenance of the signals and circuitry. All work must be completed within 18 months.

Meanwhile the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved safety upgrades at crossings in Allen and Fayette counties.

Chicago, Ft. Wayne & Eastern Railroad (CFE) will upgrade the circuitry at the North Cable Road crossing in Lima by Oct. 18, 2024. The total cost of the project is $216,973, with federal funds covering 80% and CFE, 20%.

Also, Indiana & Ohio Railway will install flashing lights, gates and a new surface at the West Court Street crossing at Washington Court House, Ohio, by Oct. 18, 2024. The project will cost $624,599, with federal funds covering most of it. Washington Court House will provide $62,344 for the new surface.
