The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) yesterday approved state funding to improve safety at grade crossings in Carroll and Peoria counties.

In Carroll County, the ICC Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) will pay 95% of a $345,351 signal design and construction project at the Grange Road crossing near Lanark. The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad Co., a subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Kansas City, will pay the remaining 5% of the costs, as well as future maintenance costs, ICC officials said in a press release. All work is required to be completed within one year of the order.

In Peoria County, the ICC GCPF will cover 95% of a $374,187 signal design and construction project at Kramm Road near Edwards, ICC officials said. Additionally, the ICC will pay for 90% of a $102,733 surface renewal project. BNSF Railway Co. will pay the remaining costs, as well as future maintenance costs. All signal work is required to be completed within the next 18 months.
