The Michigan Department of Transportation this week awarded a total $3 million across 44 projects to make grade crossing surface improvements throughout the state.
The funds come from MDOT’s annual Local Grade Crossing Surface program, which helps pay for small and large projects, from minor asphalt repairs to installing completely new track and surface materials, MDOT officials said in a press release.
The program offers 60% funding for all projects, while the railroad that owns the crossing pays the remaining 40%. MDOT also provides lump-sum cash incentives for projects to permanently close public grade crossings and capped funding incentives for track realignment projects to eliminate grade crossings, officials said.
There are about 4,800 public grade crossings in Michigan.
