National League of Cities map tracks train derailments

The National League of Cities (NLC) has released an interactive map that identifies train derailments that have occurred throughout the country.

The map displays railroad derailments between 2012 and 2023 as compiled by the Federal Railroad Administration, according to an NLC press release.

"With 140,000 miles of track in the U.S. crossing through thousands of cities, towns and villages, rail safety is a concern for residents in communities of all sizes. Unfortunately, train derailments like the one in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023 are not isolated incidents, with over 1,000 happening each year," NLC officials said in a press release.

In response to the East Palestine derailment, NLC members have called on Congress to pass the Railway Safety Act of 2023. Last month, the Senate Commerce Committee passed the legislation.
