Emergency training drills have become a routine exercise for many transit agencies. Now, one excursion train operator is working to fine-tune its emergency-response skills.

On Saturday, the New Hope Valley Railway will participate in a full-scale emergency training exercise on its line in Bonsal, N.C. The drill is designed to evaluate the performance and training of railway crews and local emergency responders during a wilderness rescue. Train crews will handle an "emergency," while emergency response personnel will treat and remove "injured" passengers from the train and determine the cause of the accident

Participating organizations include the railroad, several local police and fire departments, a sheriff's office, and emergency management and medical service crews.
