The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) on Jan. 22 approved grant funding for two rail rehabilitation projects.
The commission awarded $120,000 to Watco's Ann Arbor Railroad for a $240,000 grade crossing rehab project on the spur line serving a Jeep manufacturing complex in Toledo, Ohio. Located on Chrysler Drive, the crossing's deteriorated conditions cause delays for both railroad and motor vehicle traffic, ORDC officials said in a press release.
Ann Arbor Railroad officials anticipate higher rail traffic on that spur in the future, as automobile manufacturer Stallantis last October announced plans to begin producing midsize trucks out of the Toledo complex in 2028.
ORDC also awarded a $75,000 grant to alumina manufacturer AluChem to help fund a $150,000 project to reactivate the second rail spur serving the company's plant in Jackson, Ohio. The reactivated spur will add rail storage capacity to the facility and eliminate the need to ship product via truck, ORDC officials said.
The Ohio South Central Railroad serves the Jackson AluChem plant.
