The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio last week approved safety upgrades at four grade crossings in Columbiana, Lorain, Tuscarawas and Union counties.
The Walter Street crossing in East Liverpool, Columbiana County, is owned by Norfolk Southern Railway. The Class I will install gates and flashing lights by April 27, 2023, with a funding amount of $402,613.
The Eberhart Road crossing in Lawrence Township, Tuscarawas County, is owned by Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway. The short line will install gates and flashing lights by April 27, 2023, with a funding amount of $279,697.
The State Route 57 crossing in Grafton, Lorain County, and the Morse Road crossing in Liberty Township, Union County, are both owned by CSX. In Grafton, the Class I will reconstruct the crossing surface and upgrade to LED lights by Jan. 27, 2023, with a funding amount of $70,480. And in Liberty Township, CSX will install gates and flashing lights by April 27, 2023, with a funding amount of $284,207.
Federal funding is provided for the upgrades, PUCO officials said in a press release. The commission evaluates the state's grade crossing and reviews projects to improve their safety. Since PUCO began implementing those evaluations, train-motor vehicle crashes at crossings have decreased to 67 in 2020 from 356 in 1990.
